John 16:33b (NiV) In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
Too often people think that being a Christian means troubles should be more rare than they are for people who are not Christians. In some respects, this might be true. If we follow Jesus and do not do immoral things, the consequences of immorality will not be ours to experience. But troubles, nonetheless, are as likely to hit a Christian as much anyone else because we live in a fallen world. Sin is a real thing and we may even suffer as a result of someone else’s sin. In fact, this verse promises us that trouble will come our way. But what does Jesus mean when He says “I have overcome the world?” It doesn’t mean that God will give us a perfect life but that He will give us the life we need to overcome through Him. As Bill Wilson says “you don’t get strength FOR the battle, you get strength FROM the battle.” As we face difficulties coming our way in life, we must stand firm believing that God will carry us through. In this faith we find strength and become that much more powerful in Him.
