Leviticus 11:44a For I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy.”
I was an 8th grade science teacher and I’m here to tell you that too many people see humans as little more than animals that think too much. It’s easy to think we are just a function of our instincts (for food, pleasure etc.) and give into the lie that we ought to just be“true to ourselves”. This argument has led many into the trap of self-centeredness and other evils if we think we’re little better than cats or dogs.
But the truth is you don’t find dogs contemplating the meaning of their lives or being concerned with morality. These higher concepts are fundamental to being human. We are strikingly different from other forms of life and that should drive us to seek our purpose. Ultimately, that purpose is to “consecrate” (or set-apart) ourselves to the God who created everything. We were made by Him and for Him. Be encouraged – you are an exceptional invention from an extraordinary artist who took great pains to make you just right.
